4 Tips for Maintaining Your Water Softener and Extending its Lifespan

A water softener is a device that removes minerals such as calcium and magnesium from hard water. It works by using an ion exchange process, where resin beads inside the softener trap the hard minerals and replace them with sodium ions.

Neglecting your water softener can lead to problems such as clogging, resin depletion, and even bacteria growth, which can cause health problems. Use the following tips to maintain your water softener and extend its lifespan.

1. Regularly Check the Salt Levels

Salt helps to regenerate the resin beads in the softener tank. Over time, the resin beads become depleted and must be regenerated with salt. The water softener will not function properly or produce soft water without enough salt.

To check the salt levels in your water softener, first locate the brine tank–the smaller tank next to the main water softener tank. Open the lid of the brine tank and check the salt level. If the salt level is below half of the tank’s depth, add more salt to the tank.

A general rule of thumb is to check the salt level at least once a month. If you have a bigger family or a higher water usage, you should check the salt level more frequently.

2. Clean the Resin Tank

It is most ideal to clean the resin tank when the salt level is low, minimizing the need to empty all of the salt inside. There are two methods to clean the tank. The first method involves unplugging the water softener unit, detaching the resin tank by unscrewing bolts and disconnecting the valve. Afterward, you can clean the tank using a mixture of bleach and water before reinstalling it.

Alternatively, a more convenient and commonly used approach is to purchase a specialized iron-removing product designed for water softeners, which can be found at most home improvement stores. This product chemically transforms the iron into a soluble state, allowing it to be rinsed away with water. Follow the instructions on the package regarding the appropriate amount of product to use. Next, remove the control panel cover and locate the manual regeneration button. Using a screwdriver, turn the button to the “Service” setting, initiating the regeneration process and flushing the wastewater through the system.

Before sealing everything back up, make sure to eliminate any salt or iron buildup on the smaller components of the water softener by utilizing a cleanser and brush.

3. Check and Clean the Brine Tank

The brine tank holds the salt or potassium solution used to regenerate the resin beads inside the water softener tank. Over time, the brine tank can accumulate sediment and debris, impacting the water softener’s performance.

To check and clean the brine tank;

  • Turn off the water softener system, unplug it from the power source, and remove the lid from the brine tank.
  • Check the salt or potassium level in the brine tank. If it’s low, add more salt or potassium as needed.
  • Inspect the inside of the brine tank for any sediment or debris buildup. If you notice any buildup, use a brine tank cleaner to remove it.
  • Rinse the inside of the brine tank thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining cleaner or debris.
  • Replace the lid on the brine tank and turn the water softener system back on.

Check the brine tank at least once a month to ensure the salt or potassium level is adequate and to inspect for any buildup.

4. Schedule Regular Maintenance With a Professional

A professional maintenance appointment provides plumbing solutions to ensure your water softener is optimal, extending the system’s life and preventing costly repairs or replacements. Additionally, regular maintenance helps ensure your water remains soft and contaminant-free.

The professional will inspect the various components of the water softener system, including the resin tank, brine tank, and valve and controls. They will also make necessary adjustments or repairs to the system, clean and flush any components, and test the water to ensure it’s soft and contaminant-free.
